Michael Ferguson Biography
Michael Ferguson is a mechanical engineer and Private Pilot who discovered his passion for remote controlled vehicles more than 30 years ago. His broad range of experience includes building and operating RC cars, boats, helicopters, small and large scale fixed-wing aircraft, small UAV camera platforms and even a submarine!
Michael is the Northeastern United States small UAV flight training instructor for Unmanned Vehicle University. In this role he teaches students how to handle the aircraft in any orientation without the aid of GPS. Students learn how to use telemetry and video streaming to capture aerial photography and video, and how to effectively orient the aircraft at the edge of line of sight with and without telemetry or video to return the aircraft home to a safe landing. The course also introduces third party apps for use in autonomous cinematography, mapping and agriculture.
Proficient in all aspects of the flight envelope, Michael enjoys flying his Dehavilland Twin Otter customized for Amphibious operation, a 1/4 scale WWII Chance Vaught F4U1 Corsair, and Red Bull BO105 helicopter, as well as performing aerobatics with his 1/3 scale CAP232. He is the President of the Tri-County Eagles Flying Club in Mahopac, NY were he conducts aircraft safety inspections, new aircraft test-flights, and flight training. Michael has trained dozens of new club members, Cub Scouts and Civil Air Patrol cadets to fly radio-controlled aircraft.
Once the FAA began to approve companies for the commercial use of drones, Michael turned his life-long passion for flying into a full-fledged career. As Chief Pilot for a New York based drone cinematography company, he flew many commercially available multi-rotor sUAS, as well as custom heavy lift aircraft for the motion picture industry. Michael has worked on major motion pictures such as Fast8, The Space Between Us, The Infamous and Horse Soldiers, as well as on the television shows Billions, Underground, Chicago PD, Scorpion, and The Last Ship.
Michael has flown for NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox and other news networks, filming breaking news, storm coverage, human interest, and documentaries.
Michael is now a Freelance Pilot working for several organizations throughout the United States in cinematography and industrial inspection applications using sUAS multirotor aircraft.
